Brown University offers an environment for high-impact research in biomedical engineering in part because of the diverse instrumentation, skilled researchers, and shared technologies available to students and faculty.

Interdisciplinary Infrastructure at Brown

Our resources are distributed across the Brown campus and nearby hospitals. The most commonly used facilities are listed below.

You can locate specific equipment in core facilities throughout the state of Rhode Island via a searchable database, CoresRI. Access varies including facilities that provide: standard services for a flat fee, open access accompanied with training,  restricted access for collaborative research, and restricted access for educational purposes.

The Biomedical Center (BMC) was built in 1969 as a 4-story research space and 2-story (below ground level) teaching and laboratory space. In 1990, the Grimshaw-Gudewicz building was added to the complex.

The Building for Environmental Research and Teaching at 85 Waterman Street, formerly known as Hunter Lab, was fully renovated and repurposed in 2013. While primarily built to house environmental sciences, it is home to the Coulombe & Lee Labs.

This new space opened in the Spring of 2019 at the center of Brown’s College Hill campus is the “town square” for brain science at Brown, providing common space where researchers from across Carney-affiliated departments can share ideas and pursue innovative projects.

Coro Center was originally built in 1929 for jewelry manufacturing as part of Providence's historic Jewelry District. The building was taken over by Lifespan in the 1980s and now houses clinical and research facilities including the Chen, Crisco, Fleming, & Jay Labs.

Laboratories for Molecular Medicine (LMM) houses research labs along with the Genomics Core Facility, Structural Biology Core Facility, & the Transgenic Mouse Facility. The Fawzi lab is located at LMM.
