A new ligament surgery that stimulates the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) to heal has shown promise in reducing post-surgical posttraumatic osteoarthritis. We believe the reason behind this is that the new surgery restores the native ACL and its neural elements that normally provide information about joint function to the central nervous system, while conventional surgery does not. This study will test whether, and how, the new surgery restores muscle and joint function, partly explaining why the knee joint may be protected against post-traumatic osteoarthritis.
