Out in STEM (oSTEM) and Graduate Students of Color in STEM (GSOCnSTEM) were recently honored by Brown’s Student Activities Office for collaboration. These groups collaborated on DiversiTEAs, an ongoing event series centered around various identities in STEM.
Six students defended their PhD theses in April. They will receive their doctoral degrees on May 26th along with Thomas Valentin and Bryan Sutermaster who defended earlier in the academic year. Congratulations to all of the new PhDs!
At least six Brown University BME alums now work in various roles for the FDA. BME Director Vicki Colvin caught up with several of them during an AIMBE-FDA workshop held April 15-16 at the FDA’s White Oak campus. They all agree that a rewarding part of their work is that they help bring medical innovations to the market, ultimately improving people’s lives.

BMES Takes on Pi and Trivia

Brown’s undergraduate BMES group celebrated Pi day with pi, pie, science, scientist, and other trivia.
In an innovation that may ultimately help to prevent deadly bloodstream infections, a team of biomedical engineers and infectious disease specialists at Brown University developed a coating to keep intravascular catheters from becoming a haven for harmful bacteria.
For recent graduate Bryan Sutermaster, the road to Biomedical Engineering has been inspired by his desire to help people. For this Pittsburgh, PA native, the field of biomedical research is one that is the perfect marriage of medicine and engineering, directed towards helping those in need.

ORS 2019 - Austin, TX

Several of our Biomedical Engineering faculty and students presented posters and talks at the annual meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society in Austin, TX on February 2-5, 2019.
Second year PhD student Jacob Gusman’s road to Brown Biomedical Engineering started back when he took a neuroscience class in high school. Jacob, a New England native from Newton, MA, discovered the BrainGate Research at Brown when he started working on the final project for his neuroscience class at Newton South.
Vicki Colvin is the Vernon K. Krieble Professor of Chemistry, Professor of Engineering and Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biotechnology as well as the Director for the Center for Biomedical Engineering at Brown University.
Anthony Napolitano (PhD ’07) has balanced his interests in biomedical engineering and business for years. When asked how he incorporated entrepreneurship into his engineering studies, he says, “I tried to be well rounded in general, which is also a strength of Brown.”
