Faculty, staff, and students gathered on May 19-20 for the 2019 BME & Biotechnology PhD Programs Retreat with the mission to advance our research and training programs through scientific presentations, professional development activities, dialogue, and community building.
Students and faculty gathered in Hazeltine Commons on May 9, 2019 to cap off our yearlong capstone design projects. The capstone design course leverages the expertise and resources of Brown University BME students to tackle the plethora of clinical needs in many of our affiliated health centers. Students worked directly with clinicians and healthcare professionals to address their engineering design challenges including:
Out in STEM (oSTEM) and Graduate Students of Color in STEM (GSOCnSTEM) were recently honored by Brown’s Student Activities Office for collaboration. These groups collaborated on DiversiTEAs, an ongoing event series centered around various identities in STEM.
Six students defended their PhD theses in April. They will receive their doctoral degrees on May 26th along with Thomas Valentin and Bryan Sutermaster who defended earlier in the academic year. Congratulations to all of the new PhDs!
At least six Brown University BME alums now work in various roles for the FDA. BME Director Vicki Colvin caught up with several of them during an AIMBE-FDA workshop held April 15-16 at the FDA’s White Oak campus. They all agree that a rewarding part of their work is that they help bring medical innovations to the market, ultimately improving people’s lives.
Nicolas Fawzi's work centers on determining the structure, dynamics, interactions of large assemblies of intrinsically disordered proteins.

BMES Takes on Pi and Trivia

Brown’s undergraduate BMES group celebrated Pi day with pi, pie, science, scientist, and other trivia.
In an innovation that may ultimately help to prevent deadly bloodstream infections, a team of biomedical engineers and infectious disease specialists at Brown University developed a coating to keep intravascular catheters from becoming a haven for harmful bacteria.
For recent graduate Bryan Sutermaster, the road to Biomedical Engineering has been inspired by his desire to help people. For this Pittsburgh, PA native, the field of biomedical research is one that is the perfect marriage of medicine and engineering, directed towards helping those in need.
