Michelle Adler ‘20 was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands, but grew up in the Bay Area, just south of San Francisco, California. She’s currently a senior studying Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience, in addition to being a pre-med student. Here at Brown, she’s heavily involved in dance and club ultimate frisbee.
Six undergraduates will graduate with honors this spring. Five completed their theses in April. Sumaiya Sayeed completed her degree at the end of the fall semester.

BME Student Takes Top Prize at RI Business Plan Comp

Brown School of Engineering seniors Abbie Kohler ’20 and Greg Boudreau-Fine ’20 were named winners of the MedTech track last week at the 2020 Rhode Island Business Competition. Winners were announced Wednesday, May 13 at a virtual awards ceremony.
Peter Damian Richardson, longtime Brown University faculty member who previously served as chairman of the executive committee of the center for biomedical engineering, passed away April 21 at age 84. Richardson taught at Brown for 57 years until his retirement in 2015, ultimately becoming professor emeritus of Engineering and Physiology.

Student Spotlight - Marc Powell

Marc Powell is currently a 6th year PhD student working in the Borton Neuromotion Lab. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, he did his undergrad at Georgia Tech in Biomedical Engineering. At Georgia Tech, he worked in a lab that did cell culture-based neuroscience and neuroengineering.
In the five years that Akram Abbasi was a doctoral student in the chemical engineering program at the University of Rhode Island, her research on nanomaterials for different applications led to published articles in highly-rated professional journals and presentations at national meetings.

Shukla Earns NSF CAREER Award

Brown Assistant Professor of Engineering Anita Shukla has received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award of $550,000 over five years.

Alumni Spotlight - Vedika Chawla '13

Like many Brown students, class of 2013 alumna, Vedika Chawla, describes herself as an A+ type personality from a young age who was always organized and cared about doing well in school - qualities that make for a talented engineer. Vedika graduated from Brown with honors, earning a degree in Biomedical Engineering.

ORS 2020 - Phoenix, AZ

After spending a summer in MATLAB staring at bones, working through matrix math, googling new functions, I submitted my first abstract to a conference—the Orthopedic Research Society (ORS). I turned my summer’s work into a one-page document, securing an invitation to present a poster at this 5-day event in Phoenix, AZ.
